THE ROOM BEFORE THE ROOM.
Décor is bought with the eyes and justified afterwards. Crystal Decors came to us with a catalogue that photographed beautifully and sold nothing, because every image was of a product and none was of a room somebody wanted to live in. We stopped shooting objects and started shooting consequences.
THE BUILD
A brand system built to survive a phone screen at arm's length, then a showroom wall at three metres. Here is what was made.
One mark, two lockups, a type scale that holds from a swing tag to a hoarding, and the rules for when to break it.
Rooms, not products. Shot to a single light discipline so a catalogue reads as one place rather than forty.
Catalogue-first architecture: every product one tap from a room it lives in, and every room one tap from the enquiry.
The whole system set to work in English and Telugu without the second one looking like a translation.
HOW IT WAS MADE
PHASE 01: THE WALKTHROUGH
We went to the showroom before we opened a design file. Watching which pieces people touched, and which they walked past to reach, decided the whole visual hierarchy. the room.
PHASE 02: THE GRAMMAR
One light, one horizon, one distance. A décor brand lives or dies on whether forty photographs feel like one company, and that is a rule set, not a mood board.
PHASE 03: THE HANDOVER
A system a client can run without us: naming conventions, export presets, and a page of what not to do that is shorter and more useful than the brand book above it.
WHAT WE LEARNED
The catalogue was not underperforming because the photography was poor. It was underperforming because every frame answered a question nobody asks — what does this object look like on white — instead of the one they do ask, which is what my room would look like with it in it.
Two languages was the constraint that improved the design. Type that has to hold in English and Telugu at the same size cannot lean on a clever lockup, so the system got simpler, and simpler survived the swing tag and the hoarding better than the first version would have.
"If the photograph does not make you imagine standing in the room, it is a picture of furniture."
