CASE FILE #140: SLV SCAFFOLDING

THE BRIEF NOBODY WANTS.

Scaffolding is bought by people who will be blamed if it fails. That makes it the opposite of a lifestyle brief: nothing here is aspirational, and every word has to survive a site manager reading it on a phone in the rain. We stopped trying to make it look exciting and made it look competent, which is what the buyer is actually shopping for.

TOP SECRET

THE BUILD

A plain, hard-working identity and the pages that carry it. Here is what was made.

CHECKING THE LOAD... 100%
01
Identity System

A mark that survives being stencilled, printed at 40mm on a docket and welded onto a board.

4
Buyer Journeys

Contractor, architect, procurement and site manager. They want different things and they were asked different questions.

1
Site, Rebuilt

Capability and compliance first, because that is the order the buyer checks them in, not the order a brochure usually puts them.

Stock Photographs

Every image is their own kit on their own jobs. In this trade a borrowed picture is spotted immediately and it costs you the enquiry.

HOW IT WAS MADE

PHASE 01: THE SITE VISIT

We went to a live site before writing anything. Half an hour watching an erection crew tells you more about what the buyer fears than a week of desk research. Zero

PHASE 02: THE PLAIN WORDS

We took the adjectives out. In an industry where the downside is somebody falling, confidence reads as specificity — load ratings, turnaround, who is accountable — and never as enthusiasm.

PHASE 03: THE HANDOVER

Templates for quotes, dockets and site boards, so the identity holds up in the places a brand book never reaches and the yard actually uses.

CONFIDENTIAL

WHAT WE LEARNED

The site visit changed the brief. Half an hour watching an erection crew tells you what the buyer is actually afraid of, and it is never the thing the brochure leads with. Everything after that was written for a site manager reading on a phone in the rain.

Specificity is the tone. In a trade where the downside is somebody falling, load ratings, turnaround and a named person read as confidence, and adjectives read as a company with nothing concrete to say.

THE RULE WE KEPT:

"Unglamorous is not the same as unconsidered. It is a harder brief, because nothing decorative will save it."
